Michael Marcus

Michael Marcus (born August 25, 1952 ) is an American jazz and blues musician ( tenor saxophone , bass clarinet , clarinet , soprano saxophone , Manzello , Stritch ).

Live and act

Michael Marcus began his music career in the 1970s in blues bands by Albert King and Bobby Bland with Mel Brown . In the 1980s and 1990s he worked with musicians from the free jazz scene , such as Sonny Simmons ( Blackwoods Suite ), Frank Lowe , Phillip Wilson , Jemeel Moondoc , Denis Charles , Makanda Ken McIntyre and others. In 1996 he worked on the trio album Transcendence by Simmons with Charles Moffett . In 2000 he played in the Simmons Band with James Carter , William Parker and Jay Rosen . He worked as a baritone saxophonist at Moondoc in 2001. In 1991 his first album was released under his own name on Enja , Under The Wire , with Joseph Bowie , William Parker and Reggie Nicholson . William Parker and Dennis Charles as well as Fred Hopkins and Steve Swell worked in 1993 on Marcus' two albums for the Soul Note label ( Here At! And Ithem ). An album with drummer Cindy Blackman was followed in 1996 by the duo album This Happening with pianist Jaki Byard for the Montreal label Justin Time , in which Marcus plays the Stritch and Saxello. For the John Coltrane compositions Giant Steps and Naima he switched to the bass clarinet. Over the next two years he toured with Byard. Byard's death in 1999 ended their collaboration.

In 2000 he worked with the Cuban percussionist Patato Valdes ( Sunwheels ); In 2001 he recorded the album Blue Reality in a trio with bassist Tarus Mateen and Jay Rosen . He also began again to cooperate with Sonny Simmons; he was co-leader of “Cosmosamatics” with Sonny Simmons, which recorded eight albums and made several tours to Europe. In addition to the Cosmosamatics, Marcus worked in other formations, such as the trio with Nasheet Waits or Jay Rosen and Tarus Mateen. Marcus has worked with Billy Higgins , Roy Campbell , Joe LaBarbera , Charles and Cody Moffett , Chris Sullivan , Carlos Ward , Joe Bonner , Peter Herbert , John Patton , Curtis Lundy throughout his career ; he has also played with Makanda Ken McIntyre Ensemble, Grachan Moncur's Big Band, Zane Massey's project The Liberation Suite, and the Saxemble with Frank Lowe and James Carter. He works in a duo with Ted Daniel (trumpet), with whom he recorded the albums Duology ( Boxholder ) and Golden Atoms ( Soul Note , 2008).
