Peter Herbert (born February 29, 1960 in Bludenz , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian double bass player and composer .

Live and act

Peter Herbert grew up in Bregenz and attended the city conservatory from 1976 to 1979 . From 1981 to 1986 he studied double bass and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and from 1987 to 1989 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston . He lived in New York from 1989 to 2003 and has been based in Paris since 2003 .

Herbert played with Art Blakeys Jazzmessengers (1986), the Aydın Esen Group (1989–1996), the Paul Smoker / Phil Haynes “Double Trio” (1991), the Art Farmer Quintet (1991/1992), the Vienna Art Orchestra (1992 ), with Bobby Previte's “The Horse” (1995–1998), the Christian Muthspiel “Motley Mothertongue” (since 1996), the Marc Copland / John Abercrombie Quartet (1997–1999), David Tronzo (since 1998), Carol Robinson ( since 2003) and the Samuel Rohrers "Tree" (since 2004). He also appeared in the Eric Watson Trio (since 2005) and with Joachim Kühn (since 2005).

Herbert formed a trio with Uli Rennert and Klaus Gesing . He also worked a. a. with Sheila Jordan , Kenny Drew junior , George Garzone , Christine Tobin , Steve Lacy , Bob Moses , Tone Janša , Franz Koglmann , Lucas Niggli , Bruce Arnold and Tom Rainey . His compositions were premiered by Cascabel / NYC, Absolute Ensemble NYC, Janus ensemble / Vienna, Vorarlberger Symphonieorchester and ensemble plus / Bregenz.

Between 1992 and 2002 he wrote 14 productions for the Aktionstheater Ensemble Wien, also for the Theater Kosmos Bregenz , for the Theater klas and the La Voz Festival of the Americas / Santa Fe / New Mexico. Since 1991 he has been working regularly with the writer Wolfgang Mörth .

Herbert appears on stage as a solo artist and band musician at around 100 concerts a year. He also works as a studio musician. He has recorded around 100 CDs. In 1999 he founded the Internet record label Aziza Music. His involvement in the formation of the Lebanese oud player and composer Marcel Khalifé , with whom he has been touring concerts since 2000, deserves special mention.

Since 2008 he has lectured at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz .

Honourings and prices

In 1988 Herbert won first prize at the first Austrian jazz competition with the Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio and the Eddie Gomez Jazz Masters Award from Berklee College of Music . In 1989 he received an Achievement Award from the Boston Jazz Society for exceptional artistic ability in jazz.

In 1993 he received a promotion award from the state of Vorarlberg as a composer. This was followed by the International Lake Constance Prize for Music in 1997 and the Hans Koller Prize as "Musician of the year 2001".

Herbert has been playing with Karl Ratzer in several formations for years . Among other things, he regularly performs live in the Viennese jazz club "Porgy and Bess" on New Year's Eve and New Years with the Karl Ratzer Septet (Karl Ratzer - guitar and vocals; Howard Curtis - percussion; Peter Herbert - double bass; Ed Neumeister - slide trombone; Johannes Enders - Tenor saxophone; Peter Tuscher - trumpet).
