Christine Tobin

Christine Tobin (born January 7, 1963 in Dublin ) is an Irish jazz singer , promoter and club manager living in Great Britain .

Life

Christine Tobin grew up in Ireland and has lived in London since 1987 . There she has established herself as a diverse singer, with a repertoire that processes influences from Billie Holiday and Betty Carter to Cassandra Wilson and Joni Mitchell .

After studying at the Guildhall School of Music , Christine Tobin first became a member of the Lammas formation , led by saxophonist Tim Garland and guitarist and lyricist Don Paterson . At the same time she formed her own band with pianist Huw Warren , bassist Steve Watts and drummer Roy Dodds ; with her she recorded the first of six albums for the Babel label. Since 2010 she has been releasing on the Trail Belle Records label . Musicians such as Billy Hart , Peter Herbert and Mark Turner were involved in later albums . She has also performed with Christine Tobins Big Deal , with pianist Hans Koller and with the BBC Big Band under Michael Gibbs . In 2009 she undertook a reinterpretation of the classic Carole King album Tapestry ( Tapestry Unraveled ) in a duo with pianist Liam Noble .

Tobin also worked as a promoter in 2005, organized a club in the Progress Bar in Tufnell Park, London, and ran the Vortex Jazz Club in Dalston .

Honors

  • Tobin was nominated for Best Singer for the BBC Jazz Awards in 2004 and 2005 , and in 2008 she was the winner of the BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist .
