Don Paterson , OBE (* 1963 in Dundee ) is a multi - award - winning Scottish author and jazz musician .

Life and work

Paterson left school at 16 to work as a musician. In 1984 he went to London , where he took guitar lessons from Derek Bailey and played in Ken Hyders band Talisker. At this time he also began to study poetry and to write himself. Since the late 1980s Paterson was active with his jazz band Lammas, in which u. a. and Tim Garland , Talvin Singh , Christine Tobin played. Lammas released five albums.

After a few years in Brighton , Paterson became Writer in Residence at the University of Dundee in 1993 . In 1995 he returned to London, where he accepted a position as editor at Picador. When he moved to Edinburgh in 1998 , he began writing columns for Scotland on Sunday and video game reviews for The Times . Since 2000 he has also been a professor at the University of St Andrews . In addition to several volumes of his own poetry, he has published translations of Antonio Machado 's poems and Rilke's sonnets to Orpheus , wrote aphorisms, radio plays, plays for the Dundee Repertory Theater and pieces of music, etc. a. for Tommy Smith and edited anthologies.

Paterson is considered to be one of the greatest poetic talents of his generation. His witty poetry mixes the traditional with the postmodern and is often full of ironic or ambiguous philosophical and metaphysical allusions. As a musician, he also shows a feeling for rhythm and sound in poetry.

Paterson's first collection of poems, Nil Nil , published in 1993, won the Forward Poetry Prize , which he also received in 2008 for the poem “Love Poem For Natalie 'Tusja' Beridze ” and in 2009 for the Rain collection . God's Gift to Women (1997) won the TS Eliot Prize , as did Landing Light (2003), which also won the Whitbread Book Award . Paterson received the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 2010 and a Cholmondeley Award in 2012 . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature . Don Paterson was nominated for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature 2016.
