biography

Singh grew up in Leytonstone. He started playing the tabla at the age of five. And although he was more interested in punk rock and breakdance as a teenager, he went to India at the age of 15 to perfect his classic Indian tabla game with Lakshman Singh . After only a year he returned to England to pursue a career as a musician of the classical Indian style. However, his style was already too influenced by western music styles.

So Singh began to develop his own style towards the end of the 80s, he tried to merge western and Indian musical styles and worked with Björk , Courtney Pine , Siouxsie and the Banshees , Sun Ra , Cleveland Watkiss and the Indigo Girls , among others .

In 1995, Singh founded the Anokha club night in the Blue Note bar in London . Every Monday, drum and bass DJs and South Asian punk bands performed there - together with Talvin Singh. Within a very short time, the Anokha Club Night developed into a highlight of the London music scene. In 1997, Singh released the compilation album Anokha - Soundz of the Asian Underground .

A year later he released his first solo album - "OK", for which he won the 1999 Mercury Music Prize . In 2001 his second solo album "Ha" was released.

His virtuoso tabla playing, his unmistakable style and his increasing popularity have led and lead to numerous collaborations with other musicians (such as with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan , Najma Akhtar , Bill Laswell and Trilok Gurtu ).
