The Famennium (usually just called Famenne in German usage ) is the highest chronostratigraphic level of the Upper Devonian ( Devonian ) in the history of the earth . The stage lasted geochronologically from about 372.2 million to about 358.9 million years. The frasnium precedes the famennium ; it is followed by the tournaisium , the lowest level of carbon .

Naming and history

The Famennium is named after the Famenne region in Belgium . The stage and name were proposed by André Hubert Dumont in 1855 and introduced into the scientific literature.

Definition and GSSP

The base of the Famennium lies directly above the upper Kellwasser horizon, a major extinction event in the Upper Devonian. The end of the stage is also the Devonian-Carboniferous border, which is defined by the onset of the conodont species Siphonodella sulcata . The reference profile (GSSP = Global Stratotype Section and Point) is located in the upper Coumiac quarry near Cessenon , Département Hérault , Montagne Noire , France .
