Aydın Esen

Aydın Esen (born May 12, 1962 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish musician (piano, keyboards , electronics) of modern creative and fusion jazz and composer.

Live and act

Esen, whose father is a trumpeter, grew up with music from an early age and received classical piano lessons from the age of five, first from his father, then at the İstanbul Belediye Konservatuarı . In addition, he occupied himself with drumming. As a teenager he played in different groups and different genres. In 1982 Esen received a scholarship to the Norwegian State Academy for Music in Oslo, where he studied piano, composition and conducting. In addition, during this time he undertook his first European tours as a member of various ensembles and was also involved in several record sessions.

In 1983 he received another scholarship to the Berklee College of Music and moved to Boston . There he completed his studies and then did his Masters at the New England Conservatory of Music . In 1986, he was on the album trio of Eddie Gomez involved (with drummer Marcello Pellitteri). In the same year he formed the band Transfusion with Tommy Campbell , Kai Eckhardt , Bob Moses and the singer Randy K., who later became his wife . Soon after, he played with Gary Burton , Pat Metheny, and Emily Remler .

He presented his own albums on various labels. He also worked with Dave Liebman and again and again with his fellow student Wolfgang Muthspiel . He also went on tour with Trilok Gurtu and Jonas Hellborg and recorded with Daniel Humair , Kai Eckhardt and Andrew Anello.

Several of his compositions were performed in the field of art music under his musical direction and with him as a soloist. In 1999 he released an album of contemporary electronic music with Enfas .

In January 2020, his composition "scape-X" (commissioned by Big Basel Festival ) was premiered by Ensemble Phoenix Basel with him as a soloist at the Big Basel Festival .

Prizes and awards

Since his student days Esen has received numerous prizes for his compositions, as a pianist (including first prize at an international piano competition in Paris in 1989) and in the field of electronic music .
