Kai Eckhardt-Karpeh de Camargo (born June 15, 1961 in Mainz ) is a German jazz and fusion musician (bass guitar, composition).

Live and act

Eckhardt only discovered the electric bass when he was 15 years old . He studied from 1983 to 1987 at Berklee College of Music , which gave him a teaching position after completing his studies. During his studies he already appeared with Bob Moses , Tiger Okoshi and Torsten de Winkel . He also played with Alphonse Mouzon , Randy Brecker and Stanley Clarke . In 1988 John McLaughlin brought him into his trio with Trilok Gurtu , with whom he went on an international tour and recorded two albums. He also performed with Michael Gibbs . He then worked in the bands of Billy Cobham and Aziza Mustafa Zadeh . In 1995 he also worked with Mike Mainieri'sSteps Ahead ” and founded the group “Three of Worlds” with Paul McCandless , Kit Walker and Alan Hall. Aydın Esen , Courtney Pine and Zakir Hussain contributed to his debut album “Honor Simplicity, Respect the Flow” . He then worked with Garaj Mahal . He currently heads the Fusionband Area 61 . He played in the group Summit with Fareed Haque , George Brooks , Zakir Hussain and Steve Smith

He has worked for Thilo Berg , Edo Zanki , Maria João , Ralph Towner , Wayne Shorter , Dewey Redman , Donald Byrd , Rhiannon and the Meters and composed “Voicestra” for Bobby McFerrins .

Eckhardt has lived in California since the mid-1990s.
