Thomas W. "Tommy" Campbell (born February 14, 1957 in Norristown (Pennsylvania) ) is an American jazz drummer.

Live and act

Campbell, son of an organist and singer and nephew of jazz organist Jimmy Smith , grew up in Willow Glove near Philadelphia . He studied jazz at Berklee College of Music , receiving its Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998.

Since the late 1970s he worked with Dizzy Gillespie , with whom he played a jam session a few months before his death . He was also a regular member of the groups of Sonny Rollins , John McLaughlin , Kevin Eubanks , Jimmy Smith, Stanley Jordan , Tânia Maria , Gary Burton , Igor Butman and of The Manhattan Transfer . He has also worked on recordings for Ray Anderson , Chico Freeman , Clifford Jordan , Kevin and Robin Eubanks and David Murray With.

For several years he taught drums and percussion at Berklee College as well as at the Drummer's Collective and the New School in New York. He lives in the USA and Japan and leads several bands in both countries. In 2002 he released the album My Heart as a band leader (with Kevin Eubanks, Aydın Esen and Charnett Moffett ); In 2018 he played in Greg Murphy Murphtet .
