Tânia Maria Correa Reis (born May 9, 1948 in São Luís , Brazil ), known as Tânia Maria, is a jazz singer , pianist and songwriter .

Live and act

Tânia Maria learned to play the piano at the age of seven and won her first prize with a school band at the age of thirteen. She studied law and Romance studies and finally piano playing in Brasília . In 1971 she released her first album. In the mid-1970s she lived in France for a long time and performed in several countries. On the recommendation of Charlie Byrd , who was enthusiastic about her piano playing, she received a recording contract from Concord Records . In 1981 she settled in New York . She achieved a commercial breakthrough in 1984 with her album Come with Me , for which she received a Grammy nomination . She released more than 25 albums and was a regular guest at international jazz festivals, so she performed several times at the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival .

In her pieces she combines Brazilian music with jazz and pop, "whereby her warm, soulful alto voice and her percussive piano play complement each other with accentuations". She has also performed with other musicians like Michel Petrucciani and groups like Mondo Grosso .
