Mondo Grosso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mondo Grosso , founded around 1990, was Japan's first and for a long time the only acid jazz band .

The band was formed around the bassist Shin'ichi Ōsawa . In 1993 her first album Mondo Grosso was released by For Life Recordings. The music brought a breath of fresh air to the Japanese music market and was influenced by various sources including R'n'B , jazz , samba and bossa nova . The group, which focused on the live game, became known through the inclusion of renowned guest vocalists such as Monday Michiru , Tânia Maria or N'Dea Davenport .

Ultimately, the band's first album paved the way for Japanese club music. The album was as well received overseas as it was in Asia, leading to the release of several 12 "EPs in the US and Europe.

Mondo Grosso's 1995 album Born Free , with Jhelisa and Monday Michiru, was the last full-time production. The group separated in June 1995. According to Wolf Kampmann, the excellently produced albums and EPs "lacked the fire and intensity of the live performance." Today, the band name is used to designate Ōsawa's solo projects.
