Kevin Eubanks
Kevin Eubanks (born November 15, 1957 in Philadelphia ; actually: Kevin Tyrone Eubanks) is an American jazz guitarist . From 1995 to 2010 he was the band leader of the Tonight Show Band on the Late Night Show of the same name with Jay Leno .
Live and act
Eubanks comes from a musical family. His mother is a composer; his uncle the pianist Ray Bryant . He is the brother of trombonist Robin Eubanks and trumpeter Duane Eubanks . He studied at Berklee College of Music with Ted Dunbar . Between 1980 and 1981 he played with Art Blakey , then with Roy Haynes , Slide Hampton and in 1983 with Sam Rivers , whose concept of improvisation strongly influenced Eubanks. He went on tour with Mike Gibbs and enriched the albums of the saxophonists Gary Thomas and Greg Osby with his humorous, carefree playing style, worked with Victor Bailey and Dave Holland and has also appeared in front of the microphone with musicians such as Gary Burton and Joey DeFrancesco .
From 1982 he formed his own bands and has since recorded 11 studio albums. At the major wrestling event " WCW Road Wild 1998" he competed with Jay Leno and Diamond Dallas Page against Hulk Hogan and WCW President Eric Bischoff .
In 2005 he received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music .
At the end of May 2010, he and his band had their last appearance on Leno's Tonight Show . Eubanks left the show to devote himself more to his own musical projects and to teach in the field of music.
Trivia
On the Tonight Show , his often heard background laughter at some of Leno's punchlines became a trademark of the show. This flashy laugh was sometimes the target of derisive remarks from colleagues and also the subject of skits in other shows. Allusions to his alleged preferences for marijuana and pornography were running gags as an integral part of improvised short dialogues between him and Leno during Leno's opening monologues.
Kevin Eubanks is a vegetarian and was voted PETA’s World's Sexiest Vegetarian in 2007.
