Content

The late night show combines the genres of comedy and talk show . Elementary standards of the ritualized shows are, in addition to the moderator with skills in stand-up comedy , the presentation of ambiguous headlines from current newspapers, amusing film clips from news or other television programs , self-produced short films , short pieces of music from a live band present and two or three individually interviewed guests.

The classic late night show begins with a monologue dealing with current issues, followed by a main part and a talk part, as well as a music part. Further features are:

At that time, this late performance no longer resulted in high ratings ; because over 40% of German viewers are reached during prime time , and only around 20% in the late evening.

United States

As the title suggests, this television show will receive a slot in the late evening. US terminology differentiates between prime time (prime time) from 8:00 p.m., late prime time from 10:00 p.m. and late night from 11:00 p.m. until the early hours of the morning. This slot is occupied by the late night shows, which are broadcast there from Monday to Friday from 11:30 p.m.

The Tonight Show was the first time the world's first and most successful late-night talk show on September 27, 1954, entitled Variety Show of NBC broadcast. Their format was the model for later shows of this genre, also in Germany. The Late Show on CBS with David Letterman followed on August 30, 1993. At 11:30 p.m. the late night shows will start on NBC and CBS at the same time, ABC will run the news program Nightline and since January 26, 2003 Jimmy Kimmel Live! .

Germany

The first broadcast on German television, the clear parallels to the American late-night shows had, was that of Herbert Feuerstein designed and Harald Schmidt and himself moderated broadcast Schmidteinander . The first edition was broadcast on December 16, 1990 on WDR and from the beginning of 1994 it was broadcast nationwide on Erste . At the end of 1994 Schmidt was discontinued after 50 issues.

Thomas Gottschalk started on RTL on September 28, 1992 with Gottschalk Late Night from 11:15 p.m., an evening show that lacked essential elements of the classic late night show. The RTL night show , which was broadcast from May 16, 1994 and moderated by Thomas Koschwitz , was based more closely on the American model . Like Gottschalk's show (on April 27, 1995), it was discontinued on November 17, 1995 due to insufficient audience ratings.

The Harald Schmidt Show started on December 5, 1995 on Sat.1 and was initially based entirely on the Late Show with David Letterman broadcast at the same (local) time on CBS. The studio and the course of the show were almost completely copied. At the beginning of each show there was a stand-up by Harald Schmidt, followed by a longer phase in which Schmidt presented film recordings and skits at his desk andentered into dialoguewith his sidekick Manuel Andrack (2001–2007) and his band leader Helmut Zerlett . In the third part, Schmidt-led interviews and live music followed. The show was first recorded by Brainpool in the former Cologne Capitol cinema. From 1999, Schmidt's own company Bonito took overthe production and broadcasted from Studio 449 in Cologne-Mülheim until it was discontinued. Between 1995 and 2003, around one million viewers saw the show every evening (market shares between 11% and 14%). It was not a particular success in terms of ratings, but hardly fluctuating and reliable in terms of audience favor. The show was unexpectedly discontinued at the end of 2003 when Harald Schmidt announced that hewanted to takea creative break and the contract with Sat.1 was no longer extended by him. After a year, Harald Schmidt cameback to the TV screenon December 23, 2004 with a very similar program . From 2007 to 2009 Oliver Pocher was established as the second presenter of the show and was called Schmidt & Pocher at that time. After this turned out to be not very successful, Schmidt moderated the show from October 2009 onwards again. In 2012 the show switched back to Sat.1 and two years later to Sky , where it was discontinued in March 2014. Over the years, the concept of the show has largely remained the same.

The show TV total , which was broadcast on ProSieben from March 8, 1999 to December 16, 2015, was produced in Cologne , a late night with Stefan Raab . The format, however, differed from the usual content, because the show mainly concentrated on the presentation of excerpts from television programs of German programs that were suitable for Raab's comedy. At more than 16 years of age, it was the longest-running late night on German television.

After the (first) end of the Harald Schmidt Show , Anke Late Night was an attempt to establish Anke Engelke as the new late night show star on Sat.1 in May 2004 . It was the first German late night show to be moderated by a woman. Although the show ran on the same slot as the successful Harald Schmidt Show before , it was not a success and was discontinued in October 2004 due to low audience ratings and mostly bad reviews.

From 2004 to 2006 shone VIVA with Sarah Kuttner- show from his first and second female moderated German late-night talk show.

Since 2003, SWR has broadcast the program SWR3 latenight , initially moderated by Matthias Holtmann , which has been presented by Pierre M. Krause since 2005 and has been entitled The Pierre M. Krause Show since 2016 . The late night show Neo Magazin Royale (formerly Neo Magazin ) moderated by Jan Böhmermann has been broadcast on ZDFneo since October 2013 and on ZDF since 2015 .

2008 broadcast RTL with attention! Hartwich a short-lived late night show by and starring Daniel Hartwich .

Oliver Pocher hosted The Oliver Pocher Show on Sat.1 from October 2009 to March 2011 .

Since March 2018, the late night show Late Night Berlin has been broadcast weekly on ProSieben on Monday . The moderator is Klaas Heufer-Umlauf .

The Carolin Kebekus Show has been running on ARD since May 2020 , as well as Sträter with Torsten Sträter.

Oliver Pocher has been moderating the show Pocher - dangerously honest! .

Austria

In Austria, Hermes Phettberg's Nice Leit Show ran from 1994-1996 , the name of which alludes to late night. From 2004 to 2010, a show hosted by Alfred Dorfer called Dorfers Donnerstalk was broadcast on ORF 1 in the Thursday night comedy channel. The style of the show is reminiscent of a late-night show, but also deals with fictional people or cabaret artists who are mostly supposed to represent politicians. However, this program was already broadcast at 9 p.m. and therefore not in the “late night timeline”.

Willkommen Österreich was broadcast for the first time in 2007, alienated from the previous evening illustrated Willkommen Österreich (moderated by Dirk Stermann and Christoph Grissemann ) and from autumn 2007 it was further developed into a cabaret late-night show on Thursday night .

The program Gute Nacht Österreich with Peter Klien has been broadcast since September 2019 .

Switzerland

Late night shows have not been very successful in Switzerland so far. The Swiss television DRS tried it between 1997 and 1999 with the show Night Moor with Dieter Moor . A few months earlier, the show subtleties with Raymond Fein had been canceled after only one broadcast, on the one hand due to the bad criticism and on the other hand due to the moderator's sudden illness.

On October 17, 2005, Black'n'Blond started a new late night show on SF two . It was moderated by Roman Kilchsperger and Chris von Rohr . However, the format was discontinued after the summer break in 2006 because the audience ratings were too low. On January 27, 2008, Swiss television broadcast the new late night show Giacobbo / Müller for the first time on SF 1 . In contrast to Black'n'Blond , the ratings are at a normal level. After it was canceled in mid-2016, Deville Late Night took over the comedy slot on SRF and has since been broadcast on Fridays in the style of a classic late night show and moderated by Dominic Deville from Lucerne.

Netherlands
