concept
Last Week Tonight is a satirical news program that provides commentary on current events. In terms of content, it is based on the Daily Show , on which John Oliver previously worked. In contrast to the Daily Show , there is also a focus on investigative elements. Studio guests are invited in some episodes. Extended segments are unusual for a comedy format; with a duration of up to 22 minutes, these sometimes exceed segments of one-hour programs.
Large parts of the program, especially the long segments, are regularly published on the company's own YouTube channel. Several videos have gone viral in the United States and other countries . The most successful video is a segment about Donald Trump , which has been viewed over 30 million times. Other successful videos with over 13 million clicks deal with the surveillance by the state and the structure of FIFA .
In February 2015, HBO announced that it would also fund a third and fourth season of the show. In September 2017, HBO's Last Week Tonight was extended by three more seasons of 30 episodes each to 2020.
