John Oliver (2016)

John William Oliver (born April 23, 1977 in Birmingham ) is a British - American presenter , comedian and actor who lives in New York City . He has hosted the American late night show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver since 2014 .

Life

Youth and education

Oliver's father was a social worker and headmaster, his mother a music teacher. Both are from Liverpool . His uncle is the classical composer Stephen Oliver . Oliver grew up as the eldest of four children in Bedford and attended school there. Oliver studied at Christ's College at the University of Cambridge . In 1998 he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English . During his student days, Oliver was a member of the Cambridge Footlights amateur theater club . At the same time, David Mitchell and Richard Ayoade were also active there. In 1997 he became vice president of the club.

Career

Oliver first appeared in 2001 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of the late night show The Comedy Zone in the role of "sleazy journalist". In 2002 he had his first solo show and in 2004 and 2005 he worked with Andy Zaltzman on a double act and as a co-host of Political Animal . Together with Andy Zaltzman, he co-hosted the weekly satire and comedy podcast "The Bugle" from October 2007 to May 2015. After moving to New York City for the Daily Show , Oliver began performing in small clubs around town and later giving shows in larger halls. Oliver's first stand-up special, titled John Oliver: Terrifying Times, debuted on Comedy Central in 2008 and was later released on DVD. Since 2010, Oliver has hosted four seasons of his own New York stand-up show.

Edward Helmore wrote about Oliver in the Guardian : "His style leans toward the kind that Americans like best from the British - exaggerated, full of odd accents and mannerisms, in the vein of Monty Python." Oliver often uses his British culture as the subject of his jokes .

From 2006 to December 2013, Oliver was a correspondent for the satirical news program The Daily Show , which he hosted for three months in the summer of 2013 on behalf of Jon Stewart . He was honored with an Emmy in 2009, 2011 and 2012 for his contribution to writing for The Daily Show . From 2009 to 2014 he played Professor Ian Duncan in the television series Community . He turned down a leading role because he did not want to leave the Daily Show . From January 2010 to September 2013 he hosted the John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show , which was broadcast by Comedy Central . Since April 2014 he has hosted the late-night show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO . 2015 he was appointed by Time- magazine in the world list of most influential people added. In many cases, its broadcast on HBO is followed by a political or popular reaction. This is known as the John Oliver Effect .

Private life

Oliver lives in New York City with his wife Kate Norley. Norley is Iraq - Veteran who served during its use as a medic. The two met in 2008 at the Republican Convention , where Oliver recorded a contribution to The Daily Show . The couple married in October 2011. In November 2015, their son was born.

He became a US citizen on December 13, 2019.

Controversy

In June 2017, Oliver addressed the corporate practices of the US mine operator Robert Murray in his Show Last Week Tonight , who had previously threatened legal action in the event of negative coverage. The subsequent lawsuit was dismissed after two years, which Oliver addressed in a further episode and criticized abusive SLAPP suits .
