The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is an American late-night talk show , which every weekday evening at 23:35 on CBS from the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway in New York City will be broadcast. It will be moderated by Stephen Colbert , who is also an executive producer .

It is the follow-up to the longstanding Late Show with David Letterman , which ended in May 2015 after over 30 years. In general, this slot is considered the premier late night talk show on US television, along with the competing Tonight Show on NBC .

background

Stephen Colbert , host of the show

Stephen Colbert was introduced to this position on April 10, 2014 as the successor to David Letterman after he announced his retirement from late night after more than 30 years.

The format of the program largely corresponds to a typical late-night program with a stand-up part at the beginning of the show, several clips on current topics and up to three interview guests or musical contributions. Compared to similar programs on American television, the focus of the Late Show with Steven Colbert is a little more on political guests. So in the first few weeks a. the presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden as guests.

Colbert previously hosted the Colbert Report , a satirical comedy show on Comedy Central for ten years . Here, however, he always appeared as the fictional character " Stephen Colbert " (with quotation marks) and satirized with this character the strongly right-wing populist American television commentators such as Bill O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh . For the Late Show, on the other hand, Colbert no longer uses this fictional character, but rather moderates than himself.

The musical boss and band leader of the Late Show is Jon Batiste . He only takes on the role of the classic sidekick in a very weakened form. The house band is Jon Batiste & Stay Human , a group co-founded by Jon Batiste . All members studied together at the Juilliard School .

reception

The first editions of the new show received critical acclaim. The detailed and very emotional interview with Joe Biden was particularly well received. If the show had problems with the ratings in the first year, it has now reached the top of the audience ratings as a result of Donald Trump's election as American President due to Stephen Colbert's regular critical stand-ups.
