John Ellis "Jeb" Bush (* 11. February 1953 in Midland , Texas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was the 43rd governor of the state of Florida from 1999 to 2007  and the first Republican to serve two terms in office. Bush is a son of former US President George HW Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush . In June 2015, he announced his intention to run for his party in the 2016 presidential election. After disappointing results in several primary elections , he ended his campaign on February 20, 2016.

His nickname "Jeb" is derived from his initials.

Early years

His high school he made Accounts for a student exchange program in Mexico in 1971 at the Phillips Academy in Andover . In 1973 he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in Latin American Studies with a Bachelor of Arts . In 1974 he married the Mexican Columba Garnica Gallo (born August 17, 1953), whom he had met during his student exchange in Mexico; They have two sons and a daughter, George P. Thanks to long-time family friend James Baker , the young Jeb got a job at the Texas Commerce Bank . In November 1977 he went to Venezuela for two years to work in a new branch of the bank. In 1980 Jeb Bush supported his father in his election campaign for the US presidency. He then moved to Florida and got into the real estate business.

In addition to his native English, Jeb Bush speaks fluent Spanish .

Political career in Florida

From 1987 to 1988 he was Florida Secretary of Commerce under Republican Governor Bob Martinez . He first ran for governor in 1994 and was nominated by the Republicans. In the actual election he lost 49.2% to 50.7% of the vote to the democratic incumbent Lawton of Chile . In November 1998 he was elected 43rd Governor of Florida. He prevailed against the incumbent lieutenant governor Buddy MacKay with 55.2% of the votes . Bush took up his new post as head of government in January 1999. In 2002 he was easily re-elected as governor with 56.0%. For constitutional reasons, he was unable to run for a third term in 2006, so his term of office ended in January 2007. As governor, he campaigned for school reform and environmental protection programs, especially for the Everglades . The economy of the state should be stimulated through tax breaks. As a conservative politician, Bush was against gay and lesbian marriages and for the death penalty . But after the condemned Angel Nieves Diaz struggled with death for 34 minutes from an improperly placed lethal injection , Bush suspended all executions . Florida had stopped electric chair executions back in 2000 after two death row inmates caught fire in the execution.

In 1995 he founded the Foundation for Florida's Future , which he is president to this day. She fights to improve educational opportunities in Florida.

He converted to his wife's Roman Catholic faith at the beginning of the new millennium and is a member of the Knights of Columbus , a lay Christian organization.

Bush is also a member of the Project for the New American Century , a neo-conservative think tank that had a huge impact on US foreign policy (especially under the Bush administration ). In December 2007 the links between Jeb Bush and the subprime crisis and the Lehman Brothers bank became known.

Since December 2008 he has been on the board of Rayonier Inc. , a global timber and real estate company.

In January 2009, he renounced the election as US Senator from Florida to succeed Republican Mel Martínez in 2010. Instead, he supported the candidacy of Republican Marco Rubio , who opposed ex-Republican and Bush successor as Florida Governor Charlie Crist and the Democrat Kendrick Meek ran .

Since one in May 2006 in the newspaper USA Today published an interview with his brother George W. Bush with the statement "Jeb would be a good president someday" and the related statements of his father is, he acted as a possible presidential candidate for the 2008 election he concluded a candidacy. Several reasons were given for his failure in the primary elections: The Americans no longer had confidence in the establishment . In 1981 his father became US Vice President under Ronald Reagan , and later became President himself. His brother was US President for eight years. Political positions

Jeb Bush is considered a moderate Republican; he rejects the right-wing conservative tea party movement . During the Confederate flag debate in June 2015, Bush stated that he considered it a racist symbol. He believes that every single US state should decide on the legalization of marijuana .

Economic and health policy

Bush planned tax breaks for US citizens of all classes and spoke out in general for state deregulation . The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act should be replaced by what it sees as a better alternative.

Immigration policy

Bush campaigned for illegal immigrants to have the option of legalization , but pleaded against their naturalization .

Gun possession

Bush advocated gun ownership and concealment licenses.
In 2005, as governor of Florida , he signed the so-called stand-your-ground law .
After the attack in Charleston in June 2015, he rejected calls for stricter gun legislation; Stricter legislation could not prevent such acts of violence.

Climate change

Bush recognized climate change and spoke out in favor of reducing global carbon dioxide emissions, but gave the protection of domestic industry a higher priority overall. In the past, he has been ambiguous about the extent of human impact on climate change.
He spoke out in favor of nuclear energy in March 2008 .

Foreign policy

Bush rejected the nuclear treaty with Iran in August 2015 and announced that he would terminate it as president. With regard to the Ukraine conflict , he criticized Russia's role and called for tougher action. At the same time, he stressed that relations with Russia should not be permanently damaged. In order to intensify trade relations between the economic areas of the EU and the United States, he wants to advance the negotiation process for the Transatlantic Free Trade Agreement (TTIP).
