Wayne Mixson (1987)

John Wayne Mixson (born June 16, 1922 in New Brockton , Coffee County , Alabama - † July 8, 2020 in Tallahassee , Florida ) was an American politician ( Democrat , Republican ). In 1987 he was governor of the state of Florida for three days .

Early years and political career

After finishing high school, Mixson moved to Florida. During World War II , he served in the US Navy . After the war, he studied at Columbia University , the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Florida . He graduated there in 1947. After serving six consecutive terms in the Florida House of Representatives , he was elected lieutenant governor under Governor Bob Graham in 1978 . The two were confirmed in office four years later. Governor Graham also named Mixson his trade secretary .

In 1986, Governor Graham was elected to the US Senate ; the day of his inauguration was January 3, 1987. On that date he announced his resignation from the office of governor. Although a successor, Bob Martinez, had already been elected, the constitution stipulated that the old term of office had to be terminated before the new governor could take office. Graham's term would have expired on January 6th without his resignation. So there was a three-day period Wayne Mixson had to bridge as governor before Martinez took office.

Next life

Wayne Mixson has served on the boards of several banks and insurance companies. Politically, he switched sides twice in his later years. Originally a Democrat, he joined the Republicans in 2004 and supported the re-election of President George W. Bush . He also supported his brother Jeb Bush as governor of Florida. Then in 2005 he returned to the Democratic Party. Wayne Mixson was married to Margie Grace.
