Livingstone W. Bethel

Livingstone Wellesley Bethel (born October 26, 1845 in Nassau , Bahamas , †  October 21, 1914 in Key West , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Florida.

Career

At the age of two, Livingston Bethel and his family moved to Key West, Florida, where his father Winer Bethel served as an attorney and district judge. In the early 1870s, the father also became mayor of Key West. Livingstone attended his home public schools and the Walnut Hill Military Academy in Geneva, New York state . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1869, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Like his father, he was Mayor of Key West between 1877 and 1880.

In 1880, Bethel was elected lieutenant governor of Florida alongside William D. Bloxham . He held this office between 1881 and 1885. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his time as lieutenant governor, he practiced law in various positions. From 1884 to 1889 he was a district attorney; from 1895 to 1911 he served as a criminal judge. He was then from 1911 until his death a judge in the eleventh judicial district of Florida. The end of his judge's time was overshadowed by a long illness to which he succumbed on October 21, 1914.
