Antoinette "Toni" Jennings (born May 17, 1949 in Orlando , Florida ) is an American politician . Between 2003 and 2007, she was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Florida.

Career

Toni Jennings graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon ( Georgia ). Then she worked as a primary school teacher. She also ran her family's construction company. At the same time, she embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1976 and 1980 she was a member of the Florida House of Representatives ; from 1980 to 2000 she was a member of the State Senate . She has been President of this Chamber since 1996.

After the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Frank Brogan , she was nominated by Governor Jeb Bush as the new Lieutenant Governor of her state and was introduced to this office on March 3, 2003. She held this post until January 2, 2007, when she was Deputy Governor. In 2006, she waived a possible candidacy for governor. In the 2008 presidential elections , she supported the Republican Mitt Romney, who then failed in the primary elections .
