Jennifer Sandra Carroll (born August 27, 1959 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago ) is an American politician . She was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Florida from 2011 to 2013 .

Career

Jennifer Johnson, her maiden name, came to the United States at the age of eight. In 1977 she graduated from Uniondale High School in New York State . Between 1979 and 1999 she served in the United States Navy , where she achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander . During this time she was also able to continue her education at various universities. She later embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In the years 2000 and 2002 she ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives . Between 2000 and 2002, she headed the Florida State Veterans Office. She then served on the United States Presidential Scholars Program Commission until 2004 . She was then a member of the Veteran's Disability Commission until 2007. Between 2003 and 2011 she was a member of the Florida House of Representatives .

In 2010, Carroll was elected Lieutenant Governor of Florida as the first African American woman to side with Rick Scott . She held this office between 2011 and 2013. She was Deputy Governor . It has been in negative headlines since 2011. At first it was about forged documents of a company of which she was a co-owner. Thereafter, her offenses such as false statements and illegal tape recordings were charged in a court case. Eventually she became involved in illegal internet gambling. This ultimately led to her resignation on March 12, 2013. In April of the same year, she got a job as a consultant at Global Digital Solutions .

She and her husband Nolan have three grown children.
