Milton H. Mabry

Milton Harvey Mabry (born June 17, 1851 in Pickens County , Alabama , †  March 3, 1919 in Tampa , Florida ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Florida.

Career

Milton Mabry was the son of a trader. The family moved to Louisiana in 1856 and to the state of Mississippi around 1860 . Around 1868 Mabry enrolled at the University of Mississippi at Oxford . After studying law at Cumberland University in Tennessee and being admitted to the bar in 1872, he began to work in this profession in Mississippi. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . For one term he was mayor of the city of Tupelo . From 1879 he practiced with a partner in Leesburg (Florida). He was a member of the Florida House of Representatives in 1883 and 1884 .

In 1884, Mabry was elected Lieutenant Governor of Florida alongside Edward A. Perry . He held this office between 1885 and 1889. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . At that time, following a reform of the state constitution, the post of lieutenant governor of Florida was abolished. Mabry was the last lieutenant governor of his state until the re-establishment of this office in 1968.

After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, Milton Mabry practiced first as a lawyer again. From 1891 he was a judge on the Supreme Court of Florida . Between 1895 and 1897 he was Chief Justice presiding judge of that court. After that he was a normal judge there until 1902. From 1905 to 1915 he worked as a clerk in the administration of this court. He died on March 3, 1919 in Tampa, where he was also buried.
