Abraham Kurkindolle Allison (born December 10, 1810 in Jones County , Georgia , † July 8, 1893 in Quincy , Florida ) was an American politician and in 1865 the 6th governor of Florida.

Early years and political advancement

Allison immigrated to Florida from Georgia and settled in Apalachicola . The exact date of his arrival in Florida is unknown; but it must have been before 1832. There he began a political and legal career. He served in the Franklin County Court and later in a US federal court in Florida. Before Florida became a state in 1845 , Allison was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives. After 1845 he was a member of both the Florida House of Representatives and the State Senate as a member of the Democratic Party .

Florida governor

During the Civil War , he served in the Confederation Army and took part in some battles. In early 1865 he was President of the Senate of his state. According to the constitution at the time, there was no lieutenant governor and the Senate President had to take on these tasks. Allison became governor of Florida in March 1865 after John Milton's suicide . He was sworn in on April 1st, a few days before the end of the civil war. However, he only kept his post until May 19 of the same year. Then he fled from the Union troops, which seized him on June 19 and imprisoned him for a few months together with other politicians from the south in Pulaski, Georgia. In his short time as governor, he was unable to set any political accents. His state, like the whole of the south, stumbled toward military defeat. After four years of war, the citizens were tired of war and demoralized by the high losses.

Allison's further life is unknown. According to the sources, he was detained for six months. He must have been released again around the turn of the year 1865/1866. He died in his home in Quincy in 1893. He was married to Elizabeth S. Coleman.
