Quincy is a city and also the county seat of Gadsden County in the US state of Florida with 7972 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Quincy is located around 30 km northwest of Tallahassee in northern Florida.

history

Quincy was founded in 1828 and named after John Quincy Adams , the then ruling sixth President of the United States. In 1832 the city was elevated to the county seat of Gadsden County. The railroad age in Quincy began in 1863 with the western extension of the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad from Tallahassee. The successor company Jacksonville, Pensacola and Mobile Railroad built another section from Quincy to Chattahoochee in the 1870s .

For many years, the most important industry was tobacco growing. In 1922, tobacco growers were convinced to buy Coca-Cola shares by banker Mark Monroe , who made the city one of the richest communities in Florida. Even after the decline of the tobacco industry in the 1960s and the rise in the unemployment rate to 38%, this wealth continued to secure the people's livelihood. Even in 1996, the inhabitants Quincy had shares worth about 375 million USD .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 7,972 inhabitants were distributed over 3,169 households. The population density was 404.7 inh / km². 23.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 64.4% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 9.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 13.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 38.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 28.2% of all households. 68.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.25.

29.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 12.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 49.2% of the population were male and 50.8% were female.

The median annual income was $ 30,581, with 28.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.25% of the population and 6.75% spoke Spanish .

Quincy is crossed by US Highway 90 ( SR 10 ) and Florida State Roads 12 and 267 . The nearest airport is Tallahassee International Airport (around 30 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 716 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There was one murder, eight rapes, 18 robberies, 83 personal injuries, 106 break-ins, 266 thefts, eight car thefts and three arson attacks.
