Havana is a city in Gadsden County in the US state of Florida with 1754 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Havana is about 15 km east of Quincy and about 20 km north of Tallahassee .

history

In 1902 the Georgia, Florida & Alabama Railway opened a railway line from Tallahassee via Havana and on via Bainbridge to Cuthbert in Georgia . From 1906 to 1923 the Pelham and Havana Railroad ran from Havana to Cairo in Georgia. On December 5, 1906, the Town of Havana was officially founded. For many years, tobacco growing was an important source of income; today the city is known for its antique trade.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1754 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 885 households. The population density was 365.4 inh / km². 44.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 53.6% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 0.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.5% to several ethnic groups. 1.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 25.4% of all households and persons aged at least 65 years in 34.6% of all households. 63.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.29 people and the average family size was 2.87 people.

21.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 27.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 46 years. 44.5% of the population were male and 55.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 40,096, with 20.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100% of the population.

Havana is crossed by US Highway 27 ( SR 63 ) and Florida State Road 12 . The nearest airport is Tallahassee International Airport (around 30 km south).

The crime rate in 2010 was 310 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were two robberies, four assaults, 27 break-ins, 43 thefts and one car theft.
