Hooks is a city in Bowie County in the US state of Texas . Almost 3,000 people live in an area of just under 5.3 square kilometers.
Hooks is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes parts of the four states of Arkansas , Louisiana , Oklahoma, and Texas.
geography
Hooks is located in northeast Texas, about 6 miles from the northern and 14 kilometers from the eastern border with Arkansas. Only a few kilometers away runs one of the longest rivers in the world, the Red River , which rises in western Texas and flows into the Atchafalaya River after more than 2,000 kilometers . Wright Patman Lake stretches about 15 kilometers south of the city .
Nearby cities include New Boston, 5 miles west, Texarkana, Texas, 10 miles east, Maud, 14 miles south, Redwater, 10 miles south, Texarkana, Arkansas, 20 miles east, and De Kalb, 28 miles west). The next big city with about 1.2 million inhabitants is Dallas, about 220 kilometers southwest .
Directly south of the city limits is the 73 square kilometer Red River Army Depot of the United States Army .

US Highway 82 runs along the southern border of the city and runs for almost 2,600 kilometers from New Mexico to the east coast. Interstate 30 , which runs 590 kilometers from Texas to Arkansas, also runs along the northern city limits .
Demographics
The 2000 census showed a population of 2973, divided between 1215 households and 840 families. The population density was about 557 people per square kilometer. 84.0% of the population were white, 10.1% black, 1.0% American Indian, 0.4% Asian and 0.1% Pacific islander. 1.5% were of a different ethnicity , 2.9% had two or more ethnicities, and 3.0% were Hispanic or Latin American of any ethnicity. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 women there were about 86.6 men. The per capita income was less than $ 15,500, with about 17% of the population living below the poverty line.
By the 2010 census , the population had dropped to 2,769.
