Chattahoochee is a city in Gadsden County in the US state of Florida with 3652 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Chattahoochee is on the Georgia border in northern Florida. On the outskirts of the united Flint River and the Chattahoochee River to Apalachicola River , the km in by around 180 Gulf of Mexico flows. The city is about 25 km northwest of Quincy and about 60 km northwest of Tallahassee .

history

The railroad age in what is now Chattahoochee began in the early 1870s when the Jacksonville, Pensacola and Mobile Railroad built an extension of the existing Jacksonville - Quincy line here. 1882 The opening followed a track from the branch in Georgia located mainline of the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway for Chattahoochee. The following year the city reached the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad from Pensacola . They now created a continuous rail link between Pensacola and Jacksonville. In 1907 the Apalachicola Northern Railroad opened a branch to Apalachicola on the Gulf Coast , and in 1910 it was extended to Port St. Joe . The branch has been operated by AN Railway since 2002 .

On June 9, 1921, the Town of River Junction was finally founded at the site of the track branch and the river mouth . This was then renamed Chattahoochee on July 8, 1941 and elevated to City on August 1, 1967 .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 3652 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 1155 households. The population density was 259.0 inh / km². 44.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 51.5% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 1.0% as Asian Americans . 1.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 3.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 30.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 32.8% of all households. 64.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.33 people and the average family size was 2.93 people.

17.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 38.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 45 years. 60.8% of the population were male and 39.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 37,308, with 48.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.01% of the population and 3.99% spoke Spanish .

On July 2, 1973, the US Arsenal Officers Quarters were entered on the National Register of Historic Places .

Chattahoochee is crossed by US Highway 90 ( SR 10 ). The city is a hub for rail freight transport: Here a line from AN Railway to Port St. Joe branches off the main line of CSX Transportation . The nearest airport is Tallahassee International Airport (around 60 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 272 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were three robberies, 36 personal injuries, 14 break-ins, 28 thefts and two car thefts.
