Port St. Joe is a city and also the county seat of Gulf County in the US state of Florida with 3445 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Port St. Joe is located on Saint Joseph Bay , part of the Gulf of Mexico . The city is around 140 km southwest of Tallahassee .
history
In 1910, the extension of the railway line of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad from Apalachicola to Port St. Joe was opened. From now on there was a connection to Chattahoochee , where the route met the route operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad from the direction of Pensacola .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 3445 inhabitants were distributed over 1868 households. The population density was 400.6 inh / km². 71.5% of the population identified themselves as whites, 25.8% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 0.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 2.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 28.5% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 37.1% of all households. 65.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.34 people and the average family size was 2.89 people.
22.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 18.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 29.9% were 60 years or older. The mean age was 47 years. 48.1% of the population were male and 51.9% were female.
The median annual income was $ 40,716, with 13.9% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 99.0% of the population and 1.0% spoke Spanish .
