Frederick B. Hodges
Frederick Benjamin "Ben" Hodges (born April 16, 1958 in Quincy (Florida) ) is a lieutenant general a. D. of the United States Army . Hodges was in his last assignment from November 5, 2014 to December 2017 Commanding General of the US Army Europe (also known as the 7th US Army) and thus Supreme Commander of the US Land Forces for the territory of Europe and the successor states of the Soviet Union including Russia . He replaced Donald M. Campbell as USAREUR commander . Hodges' successor was Christopher Cavoli .
Life
Hodges completed his officer training by May 1980. He was then first used in Germany as a platoon leader ; then there were troop and staff assignments at company , battalion and brigade level , mainly in the 101st Airborne Division . Foreign missions took Hodges to Afghanistan as Commander Regional Command South (2009) within the framework of ISAF and to Iraq within the framework of Operation Iraqi Freedom .
Before Hodges took over USAREUR command, he was the commander of NATO's land forces in Izmir . In 2015, Hodges argued that Russia was preparing for a war that might take place five to six years later.
After the major maneuver Anakonda 16 in June 2016, Hodges called for "a kind of military Schengen area " to allow US troops and equipment with vehicles to move freely, including US tanks without customs formalities through all NATO countries in Europe can rotate.
Hodges has announced that he will be retiring in his home state of Florida and working for the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), a think tank focusing on security policy and Eastern Europe. Hodges is also active in The Alphen Group (TAG), which is a virtual association and network of strategic "minds" from various disciplines that is concerned with the future of transatlantic relations and security.
