Robert Hamilton McWhorta Davidson (born September 23, 1832 in Quincy , Gadsden County , Florida , †  January 18, 1908 there ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1891 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Davidson attended his homeland public schools and the Quincy Academy . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to work in Quincy in his new profession. Politically, Davidson was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1856 to 1859 he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives ; then he was a member of the State Senate from 1860 to 1862 . During the Civil War , Davidson served in the Confederate Army , where he rose to lieutenant colonel.

In 1865, Davidson was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Florida Constitution. In the congressional elections of 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of his state , where he succeeded Jesse Johnson Finley on March 4, 1877 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . Between 1883 and 1889, Davidson was chairman of the Railways and Canal Committee. In 1890 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

From 1897 to 1898 he was Florida State Railroad Commissioner. Otherwise he worked as a lawyer in Quincy until his death on January 18, 1908.
