Mario Savioni (* around 1608 in Rome ; † April 22, 1685 ibid) was an Italian composer and alto of the Baroque.

Life

Mario Savioni received training as a choirboy under Vincenzo Ugolini at San Luigi dei Francesi , whom he followed in 1621 as a contralto at the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's Basilica. In September 1631 he returned to S.Luigi with Ugolino and received a higher salary than the other singers as his assistant. From 1638 he worked with Giulia's successor, Orazio Benevoli , a collaboration that ended in 1644 when he resigned from the position of Kapellmeister to S. Luigi. Savioni also worked closely with Luigi Rossi , the organist at S. Luigi. Savioni sang the role of Alceste at a performance of Rossi's opera Il Palazzo incantato in March 1642 at the Palazzo Barberini . The contact with Cardinal Antonio Barberini that came about on this occasion was probably decisive in that Savioni was admitted to the papal chapel in the same year and he was elected as its director for the years 1659 and 1668.

Works

Along with Luigi Rossi, Savioni was one of the most productive Italian cantata composers of his time, from individual arias to large-scale cantatas (with several arias and recitatives). In addition to a total of around 180 cantatas, he composed numerous motets, madrigals, the sacred opera in three acts S. Agnese, which was performed in 1651 with elaborate stage technology in the Palazzo Pamphilj , and the oratorio per ogni tempo .
