Orazio Benevoli (born April 19, 1605 in Rome , † June 17, 1672 ibid) was an Italian conductor and composer .

Life

Orazio Benevoli was the son of the Lorraine confectioner Robert Vernouot and the Roman Livia Vivargenta. François-Joseph Fétis and Robert Eitner state in their music lexicons that Orazio Benevoli was a natural son of Duke Albert of Lorraine.

Benevoli received his musical training as a choirboy at San Luigi dei Francesi , under Vincenzo Ugolini and Lorenzo Ratti (1590–1630). In 1624, at the age of 18, he became Kapellmeister at the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere and in 1630 as Kapellmeister at Santo Spirito in Sassia . In 1638 he succeeded his teacher Ugolini at San Luigi dei Francesi and remained in this position until 1644. At this point he left Rome to be in the service of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria until the beginning of 1646 . After his return from Vienna he was appointed Kapellmeister to Santa Maria Maggiore in February 1646 , but only six months later he became Kapellmeister at the Cappella Giulia in St. Peter's Basilica, an office which he held until his death. Benevoli's students include Ercole Bernabei and Paolo Lorenzani .

He created about twenty masses and a large number of psalms and motets and is considered to be one of the main representatives of the Roman colossal baroque.

The 53-part Missa Salisburgensis, rediscovered in the 19th century, as well as the Missa Bruxellensis were ascribed to him earlier. This has now been refuted. In 1975 Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber could be clearly identified as the creator of the two fairs .
