Azra Jafari ( Dari : عذرا جعفری) was appointed mayor of the city of Nili , capital of Daikondi province , by the Afghan President Hamid Karzai in December 2008 ; she thus became the first female mayor of Afghanistan .

During the rule of the Taliban, she lived as a refugee in Iran. After the invasion of Afghanistan by US troops and their allies and the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, she returned to her home country and took part in the Loja Jirga . Before her appointment as mayor, she worked as a teacher and for welfare rights organizations.

Jafari is married and has a daughter who was born in 2004. Her husband, Malek Shafi'i , is a filmmaker in Kabul .
