Antonio Barberini
Antonio Barberini (born August 5, 1607 in Rome , † August 3, 1671 in Nemi ), Duke of Urbino , was Archbishop of Reims and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.
Life
He came from the noble family of the Barberini , was the son of Carlo Barberini , younger brother of the Cardinal Dean Francesco Barberini and nephew of Pope Urban VIII.
On February 28, 1628 he became cardinal deacon of the titular church of Santa Maria in Aquiro and prefect of the Apostolic Signature , 1631 Duke of Urbino, from 1632 cardinal deacon of the titular church of Sant'Agata dei Goti and prefect of the Congregation for the Spread of the Faith . In 1633 he was ordained a priest and in 1638 cardinal chamberlain . From 1642 he was cardinal priest of the titular church Santa Maria in Via Lata , from 1653 of Santissima Trinità al Monte Pincio . In France he was 1653 under Louis XIII. elected Bishop of Poitiers , but was not subsequently confirmed by the Holy See. From 1655 he was cardinal bishop of Frascati , then grand almosenier , legate of Avignon and from 1657 also archbishop of Reims, returned to Italy after his reconciliation with the pope, became cardinal bishop of Palestrina in 1661 and died in Nemi in 1671.
He distinguished himself as a patron of the sciences and wrote poetry himself in Latin and Italian. Barberini was known as a collector of excellent works of art, including paintings by Caravaggio and Correggio .
Barberini scandalized Roman society in the 1640s through his love affair with the singer Leonora Baroni , whom he eventually married to his private secretary Castellani, and his subsequent long-term homosexual friendship with the castrato Marc'Antonio Pasqualini .
Barberini was Grand Cross Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from 1635 to 1639 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta.
