Giulio Cesare Sacchetti (born December 17, 1587 in Rome , † June 28, 1663 ibid) was an Italian Curia Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Giulio Cesare Sacchetti was the son of Giovanni Battista Sacchetti and his wife Francesca Altoviti, his parents came from Florentine patrician families . He was born on December 28, 1587 in the Church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome baptized . Sacchetti attended the universities of Perugia and Pisa , where he obtained a doctorate in law . Under Pope Paul V he became the papal house prelate and secretary of the Council Congregation . In 1622 he found himself as a trainee lawyer at the courts of justice of the Apostolic Signature . He was ordained priest on November 18, 1623 in the palace chapel of Cardinal Ottavio Bandini by Pietro Dini , Archbishop of Fermo .

Giulio Cesare Sacchetti was elected Bishop of Gravina on December 4, 1623, for which he needed a dispensation because he had received the ordination less than six months earlier. He received his episcopal ordination on December 10, 1623 in the Roman church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli Cardinal Agustín Spínola Basadone , Bishop of Tortosa ; Co- consecrators were Ottavio Accoramboni , the Archbishop of Urbino , and Diego Merino , the Bishop of Montepeloso . Giulio Cesare Sacchetti was Nuncio in Spain from January 27, 1624 to 1626 .

In the consistory of January 19, 1626, Pope Urban VIII elevated him to cardinal priest . On March 16 (or 17), 1626 Giulio Cesare Sacchetti was transferred to the episcopal see of Fano ; he gave up this episcopate before September 16, 1635. He received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Susanna on December 2, 1626. From March 8, 1627 to May 1630, he was legate in Ferrara. He was also a legate in Bologna from April 20, 1637 to May 30, 1640. On June 22, 1640 he was Prefect of the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature and from January 7, 1641 to January 13, 1642 he was chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College . Giulio Cesare Sacchetti took part in the 1644 conclave , which Pope Innocent X elected; During the conclave, Cardinal Gil Carrillo de Albornoz declared the Kingdom of Spain to be exclusive against the election of Cardinal Sacchetti as Pope. On April 29, 1652 Giulio Cesare Sacchetti moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere . He was raised to cardinal bishop on September 23, 1652 and received the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati . He also took part in the 1655 conclave when Alexander VII was elected Pope, but his own election was again prevented by the Spanish exclusivity. On June 1, 1655 he became prefect of the Congregation for Rites , which he remained until his death. On October 11, 1655, he moved to the suburbicarian bishopric of Sabina . Finally, on July 28, 1661, he became Prefect of the Council Congregation, which he also held until his death.

Giulio Cesare Sacchetti died on June 28, 1663 in Rome and was buried in the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini .

His nephew Urbano Sacchetti also became a cardinal in 1681.
