Girolamo Colonna the Elder
Girolamo Colonna (born March 23, 1604 in Orsogna , † September 4, 1666 in Finale Marina near Genoa ) was an Italian cardinal and member of the Colonna family .
Life
Girolamo Colonna was born in Orsogna . The members of his extended family included numerous Italian princes and nobles of the 17th century. His parents were Filippo I Colonna , Duke and Prince of Paliano , and his wife Lucrezia Tomacelli. His sister, Anna Colonna , was married to Taddeo Barberini , brother of the Cardinals Francesco and Antonio Barberini .
Another brother-in-law, Maffeo Barberini , came from the nephew and Cardinal Carlo Barberini as well as the niece Lucrezia Barberini , who in turn married Francesco I. d'Este .
At the request of his sister Anna, Colonna was raised to the status of cardinal by Pope Barberini Urban VIII (the uncle of his brother-in-law Taddeo) on August 30, 1627 .
After the death of Pope Urban VIII, Girolamo Colonna took part in the 1644 conclave , in which Pope Innocent X was elected. He was archpriest of the Lateran Basilica and Legatus a latere for the opening and closing of the Holy Door in the Lateran Basilica in the year of Giubileo universale 1650. He was also involved in the 1655 conclave , in which Pope Alexander VII was elected.
Pope Innocent X appointed him ambassador of the Holy See in Spain . He was called to Spain by King Philip IV and commissioned as an advisor in state and military affairs. He also celebrated the liturgy for the marriage between Emperor Leopold I and Infanta Margarita , the daughter of Philip IV. He accompanied her to Germany as a legacy.
In Spain he was accompanied by Jules Mazarin , then 17 , who would later also become a cardinal and who supported Colonna's brother-in-law Taddeo and his brothers when they went into exile in France during the schism between the Barberini and the Pamphili .
King Philip IV died in 1665 and Colonna took part in the final rites. After the king's death, Colonna returned to Italy, but died there on September 4, 1666 in the Dominican convent in Finale Marina near Genoa.
Letters from Milan and Genoa dated January 15, 1667 brought the news. After six years his remains were transferred to Rome and buried in his family's chapel in the Lateran Basilica.
