Girolamo Colonna di Sciarra , also Gerolamo Colonna , (* May 8, 1708 in Rome ; † January 18, 1763 ibid) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Cardinal Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church from 1756 to 1763.

Life

Girolamo Colonna was the son of Francesco Colonna di Sciarra, IV. Principe di Carbognano (1684–1750) and Vittoria Salviati (around 1641–1701). He was the brother of Giulio Cesare Colonna, V. Principe di Carbognano (1702–1787) and Cardinal Prospero Colonna di Sciarra (1707–1765). He was a descendant of Oddo di Colonna, who as Martin V was Pope from 1417 to 1431.

Girolamo Colonna was Prefect of the Papal House from 1732 to 1743. In 1743 he was appointed archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . On September 9, 1743, Pope Benedict XIV accepted him and his brother Prospero Colonna di Sciarra into the college of cardinals. On December 2, he was appointed cardinal deacon with the titular church of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria and on September 25, 1746 he was ordained. In 1753 he was appointed cardinal deacon with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso within the Palazzo della Cancelleria . In 1756, following Silvio Valenti Gonzaga, he was appointed cardinal chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church and assigned to the titular church of Santi Cosma e Damiano . 1760 was made by Pope Clement XIII. the allocation of the titular church of Sant'Agata dei Goti . His successor as cardinal chamberlain was Carlo Rezzonico the Younger .

He was Grand Prior in Rome for the Order of Malta , and later for the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem .
