Carlo Barberini (born June 1, 1630 in Rome ; † October 2, 1704 ibid) was a cardinal from the Barberini family .

Life

Barberini, the great-nephew of Pope Urban VIII , fled to France with his family in 1646, as the Barberini feared hostile policies by the new Pope Innocent X after the death of Urban VIII . After the death of his father Taddeo, he inherited the title of Prince of Palestrina and the office of Prefect of Rome from him. With the mediation of his uncle Francesco Barberini , Carlo was able to return to Rome in 1652, as was his family.

In the consistory of June 23, 1653 Innocent X took him on as cardinal deacon of San Cesareo in Palatio in the cardinal college , Barberini renounced the title of prince of Palestrina in favor of his younger brother Maffeo (1631–1685), who married the papal niece Olimpia Giustiniani . Cardinal Barberini received minor orders in September 1653 and was ordained a deacon on January 1, 1655 . After Innocent's death in the same year, he took part in the 1655 conclave that elected Alexander VII Pope. On August 30, 1660 he opted for the title diaconia Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . Then Cardinal Barberini became Apostolic Administrator of Palestrina and also led the official business of the Camerlengo , since incumbent Antonio Barberini had withdrawn from public life. Under Pope Clement IX. he became Cardinal Protector of Savoy and Ireland and a member of the Index Congregation . In 1667 he returned once more to the titled deaconry San Cesareo in Palatio . In 1670 he worked towards a new edition of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Cardinal Barberini, who was also abbot of Subiaco, held a synod there in 1674. On December 2nd of the following year he opted for the Santa Maria diaconia in Cosmedin . Pope Innocent XI. appointed him in 1679 as papal legate in Urbino. In 1681 the Pope appointed him cardinal protector of the Kingdom of Poland, which he remained until his death.

In September 1683 he was ordained a priest and became a cardinal priest of Santa Maria della Pace . In 1685 Cardinal Barberini opted for the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina and became a cardinal proto-priest . After the death of Alexander VIII in 1691 he was considered papabile , d. H. as a candidate for successor. The then elected Pope Innocent XII. appointed Cardinal Barberini on July 17, 1698 Prefect of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide . Because of his political neutrality, Clemens XI appointed him . 1702, at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession , as envoy to King Philip V of Spain in Naples.

Cardinal Barberini died in October 1704 and was buried in the family chapel in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle .
