Pamphilj (noble family)
Pamphilj or Pamphili is an Italian noble family originating from Umbria . In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Pamphilj were politically and ecclesiastically closely integrated into the Roman Curia , from which a pope and several cardinals emerged.
The Pamphilj family, which died out in the male line in 1760 , was inherited by the Genoese Doria- Landi family . The Doria-Pamphilj-Landi have meanwhile also expired in the male line.
Family history
The family came from Gubbio . At the end of the 15th century it moved its seat to Rome . Under the pontificate of Pope Innocent VIII (1481–1492) family members were entrusted with church and administrative activities. Girolamo Pamphilj was appointed the first cardinal of the Pamphilj family in 1604 .
The Pamphilj reached the height of power with the election of Giovanni Battista Pamphilj as Pope Innocent X , who held the Petrus See from 1644 to 1655.
The family owned several palaces in Rome, they owned large country estates and estates and they gave themselves the title of prince . By marrying into wealthy families like the Doria and the Barberini , they were able to consolidate fame and power. The male line died out in 1760. On behalf of Innocent X, they were on the side of the Barberini in the War of Castro against the Duke of Parma between 1639 and 1649 .
Anna Pamphilj von Gubbio, the heiress of the famous Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj in Rome and large estates, married the Genoese Giovanni Andrea III in 1671. Doria Landi. The Roman branch of the Pamphilj family died out in 1760 with Girolamo Pamphilj. In 1763 Prince Andrea IV. Doria adopted the name Doria Pamphilj Landi, which is still valid today . This family also died out in 2000 with the death of Orietta, the only daughter of Prince Filippo Doria Pamphilj Landi; the Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj with the large art collection inherited her adopted children Jonathan and Gesine.
The Pamphilj belonged to the Borghese and their side line Aldobrandini as well as the families Barberini, Caetani , Chigi , Colonna , Lante della Rovere, Massimo , Odescalchi , Orsini , Pallavicini , Riario Sforza , Ruspoli and Torlonia among the most famous royal houses of the urban Roman nobility .
Pope and Cardinals
A pope and numerous cardinals emerged from the family, among them:
- Girolamo Pamphilj (1544–1610), cardinal
- Giovanni Battista Pamphilj (1574–1655), as Pope Innocent X.
- 1644 Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphilj (1622–1666). He was the son of Pamphilio Pamphilj and Donna Olimpia Maidalchini .
- 1681 Benedetto Pamphilj O.SI.o.Hieros (1653-1730). He was the son of the former Cardinal Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphili, who had retired from church service and in 1647 married Olimpia Aldobrandini , Princess of Rosanno and widow of Paolo Borghese .
- 1785 Antonio Doria Pamphilj (1749–1821) and Giuseppe Maria Doria Pamphilj (1751–1816) come from the line of Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphilj, his daughter Anna, who had married into the family of Andreas Doria -Landi.

- 1816 Giorgio Doria Pamphilj Landi (1772–1837), grandson of Anna and Andrea Doria-Landi and son of Andrea Dori-Landi from his marriage to Leopolda di Savoia-Carignano.

coat of arms
The coat of arms of the Pamphilj shows a silver dove on a red field with an olive branch in its beak. The head bar is divided into three blue fields, each with a golden lily . The family coat of arms was also part of the Pope's coat of arms of Innocent X.
