Albano Laziale is an Italian city that belongs to the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio , with 40,879 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Surname

The name Albano is derived from the ancient Ager Albanus . In 1872 the place was given the addition Laziale to distinguish it from Italian places of the same name .

Albano Laziale is located 25 km southeast of Rome , 12 km south of Frascati and 23 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea near Torvaianica (municipality of Pomezia) . The city, which is located in the Alban Hills above Lake Alban , belongs to the municipalities of the Castelli Romani and is part of the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani nature park .

While the core city lies on the edge of the crater of Lake Alban, the districts of Cecchina and Pavona extend on the plain at the foot of the Alban Mountains. The municipality extends over a height of 110 to 565  m slm .

The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).

The neighboring municipalities are, clockwise: Castel Gandolfo , Rocca di Papa , Ariccia , Ardea , Pomezia and Rome .

history

After the destruction of Alba Longa in 665 BC. The Ager Albanus became the preferred area for the villas of Roman patricians. In 197 AD, Emperor Septimius Severus built the Castra Albana, a legionary camp for the Legio II Parthica , which became the nucleus of today's city.

Albano has been a bishopric since 464 at the latest. During this time the Church of San Pietro was built in the ruins of the baths using stones from the castle. In 964 Emperor Otto I handed Albano over to the Savelli family , with whom it remained until 1697, when it was confiscated by the Apostolic Chamber .

During the Second World War , the city was badly damaged in 1944 bombings by the American Air Force .

Albano is the seat of the Catholic, suburbicarian diocese of Albano . The majority of the inhabitants belong to the Roman Catholic Church . The city has eight parishes, four in the city center, two in the Pavona fraction and one each in the Cancelliera and Cecchina fractions.

Nicola Marini ( PD ) was elected mayor in April 2010 and confirmed in office in May 2015. His center-left alliance also has the majority in the municipal council with 15 out of 24 seats. He replaced Marco Mattei ( Rosa Bianca ) (2000–2010), who was no longer running.

  • The cathedral of San Pancrazio with a facade from 1772 is the bishopric of the diocese of Albano . The church itself goes back to a building that Pope Leo III. (795–815) built on the ruins of a pre-Christian basilica .
