Train

The Ferrovie Laziali , abbreviated to FL (until 2012 as FR - Ferrovie Regionali -) are a system that includes the suburban railways operated by Trenitalia in the greater Rome area and are integrated into the Metrebus network tariff . It currently consists of eight lines that allow regional traffic to the surrounding area in different ways. The operation is financed and commissioned by the Lazio Region and the Metropolitan City of Rome . From 1990 to 2002 the rail network was referred to as Ferrovie Metropolitane (FM) and from 2002 to 2012 as Ferrovie Regionali (FR). The old abbreviations are still omnipresent in the signs.

Lines

Lines FL1, FL2 and FL3 are S-Bahn trains that run every quarter of an hour during rush hour and every half hour during off- peak hours. In the urban area there is a high density of stops on the routes, with lines FL1 and FL3 in the outer parts of the city partly running in tunnels and functioning as a supplement to the three metro lines. Double-decker railcars, which enable barrier-free entry, are used on these lines .

The trains that run on the FL2 route that do not end in Lunghezza are also known as the FL2 line. These are conventional locomotive-hauled regional trains, which, with the exception of the Tiburtina terminus, skip all stops in the urban area from Rome to Ponte Di Nona and Roma Prenestina and sometimes only run hourly.

Lines FL4, FL5, FL6, FL7 and FL8 are regional trains with fewer stops, with lines FL4 and FL5 also running every quarter of an hour during rush hour. The lines FL6, FL7 and FL8, on the other hand, only run every two hours at times. The FL4 line is to have its own route in the city area and new stops in the foreseeable future. For lines FL5 to FL8, however, there are no specific plans for an expansion.

history

Because of the increasing car traffic in Rome , the Ferrovie dello Stato introduced a municipal railway service (servizio urbano) on the route to Viterbo on April 15, 1967 . The line was 18 km long and ran between Tiburtina and Monte Mario stations , with stops in Tuscolana , Ostiense , Trastevere and San Pietro , the journey time was approximately 40 minutes. The route was served by diesel railcars of the ALn 668.1400 series . The line was later extended to La Storta station and further stops were added.

On the basis of Act No. 396 of December 15, 1990, the construction of a suburban railway network called Ferrovie Metropolitane (FM) began in 1994 . The first two lines, FM1 and FM2 (now FL1 and FL2), started operating with the start of the summer schedule. Lines FM4 to FM7 followed in 1994, line 3 was not added until 1999. Over the course of time, these lines have been extended several times, or additional stops have been added to the existing network and the regular timetable has been condensed. On the route to Rome-Fiumicino Airport (FM1), the branch line to Fiumicino-City was closed in 2000.

Because of the regionalization of local public transport, the Ferrovie Metropolitane (FM) were renamed Ferrovie Regionali (FR) in 2004 and the planning responsibility was transferred to the Lazio region . At the same time, the new FR8 line was formed from the FR7 branch line to Nettuno. Between 2012 and 2013 it was initially unofficially renamed Ferrovie Laziali (FL).
