Leonardo Express is the brand name of a train service operated by Trenitalia . The train runs non-stop between Rome Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini train station in central Rome .
history
The Leonardo Express was introduced simultaneously with the opening of the branch line to the airport on May 27, 1990. The name results from the nickname of the airport, Leonardo da Vinci .
offer
The Leonardo Express runs every half hour from 6:23 a.m. to 11:23 p.m. from Fiumicino and from 5:35 a.m. to 10:35 p.m. from Termini, operation is guaranteed even in the event of a strike. The journey time of the train on the approximately 37 kilometers long railway line Roma – Fiumicino takes about 32 minutes. A one-way ticket at the machine costs € 14 (as of May 2019) , and a ride is free for a child under 12. Only 1st class is offered. The tickets already grant access to the platform, but have to be validated separately in the automatic stamping machine.
The trains were composed of former UIC-X long-distance coaches and FS E.464 locomotives. Since December 2011, modern electric multiple units of the type ALe 501-ALe 502 ("Minuetto"), since October 2015 FS ETR 425 ("Jazz") from Alstom in a special paint scheme have been used for the Leonardo Express.
Alternatives
In addition to the Leonardo Express, Trenitalia offers a quarter of an hour to Fiumicino with line FL1 of the suburban train-like agglomeration traffic of the city of Rome. The cheaper FL1 at € 8 (as of June 2015) leads through the city to Fara in Sabina or Poggio Mirteto or Orte .
There are numerous transfer options in Rome: the train stations Trastevere (FL3, FL5), Ostiense ( Metro B Piramide by foot , regional train to Lido di Ostia from Porta San Paolo), Tuscolana (Metro A Ponte Lungo, also by foot) and Tiburtina (Regional and long-distance traffic, FL2, Metro B Tiburtina ), but Termini is not served.
As a further, even cheaper alternative, several companies offer shuttle buses from Terminal 3 of the airport to the Termini, Ostiense and Tiburtina train stations and to Piazza Cavour via Valle Aurelia.
