history

In ancient times , today's beach was three kilometers from the coast in the sea; Back then, ancient Ostia, which is now inland, was still on the water. Today's coastline was only through siltation due to Tiber alluvial deposits . In the 19th century there were salt pans and swampy terrain here.

In 1883 day laborers from Romagna settled and began to reclaim . In 1908, the establishment as a coastal suburb of Rome was officially approved and, under Benito Mussolini , it was linked to the capital in 1927 with the construction of the Via del mare , Italy's first motorway .

After World War II , several bathing facilities were built on the coast and Ostia became a popular vacation spot for tourists. Due to water pollution in the 1970s, the seaside resort's popularity fell.

Since 1956, Lido di Ostia has been a popular place to live for airport staff at the then new Fiumicino Airport . In 1976 Ostia became part of the XIII. Munizipium , today the Xth municipality , of Rome.
