Castel Fusano is the name of the 30th zone of Rome in the area of the Agro Romano , referred to as Z.XXX , it belongs to the 13th Municipium Ostia and has 24,215 inhabitants (2009). It is located in the south of Rome and borders the zones Z.XXXIV Casal Palocco , Z.XXXIII Acilia Sud , Z.XXIX Castel Porziano , Q.XXXV Lido di Castel Fusano . It takes its name from the Castel Fusano Castle, originally an Orsini estate and from 1755 until today in the possession of the Chigi family . Besides Casal Palocco, it is the only zona that is not bordered by the ring road, the Tiber, the Tyrrhenian Sea or a commune.

Natural park

The south-western part of the zone is occupied by the Pineta di Castel Fusano Natural Park, the largest green area in the urban area of Rome. It has been a nature reserve since 1980 and has been part of the Riserva naturale Litorale romano (nature reserve of the coast of Rome) since 1996 . The park is covered with the maquis typical of the Mediterranean . Since the 18th century, the territory has been afforested with pines and holm oaks .

Larger animals such as deer , roe deer , and fallow deer have disappeared today. The nature park is still home to numerous animal species such as red fox , wild boar , porcupine , badger and turtle as well as numerous species of birds. The park has been the victim of serious arson for many years.

In the park there are still remnants of the ancient Via Severiana , which connected Portus Romae with Terracina as a coastal road .

Churches

The area was only settled in the last few decades. The name of the settlement Infernetto (dt. Little hell ) is reminiscent of former charcoal burning . There are therefore no special sights in Castel Fusano. The churches are also more recent:

  • San Corbiniano , in via Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, in the Infernetto district. Parish founded on October 20, 1989; Laying of the foundation stone on June 25, 2006, since November 20, 2010 title church by Cardinal Reinhard Marx
  • San Tommaso apostolo, in via Lino Liviabella, also in Infernetto. Parish founded on February 19, 1964
  • Santa Maria dei Pellegrini e Sant'Aristide, in via Bernardo Pasquini. Belongs to the parish of San Tommaso Apostolo
