Prati (Rione)
Prati (Italian for meadows ) is the XXII. Rione (district) of Rome . It extends to the former Prati del Castello (castle meadows) on the right bank of the Tiber north of Castel Sant'Angelo .
history
From 1870 the open spaces north of the Castel Sant'Angelo were systematically developed. This was the first time that Rome grew beyond the ancient Aurelian Wall . From 1882 a large barracks was built on the open space . The city expansion under Mayor Ernesto Nathan , who ruled from 1907 to 1913, created residential areas. The Prati municipality was finally established on August 20, 1921. Due to the tension between the Kingdom of Italy and the Holy See, all streets were initially named after people from ancient Rome and the Risorgimento .
Since the Lateran Treaty was signed in 1929, the Rione has been directly adjacent to the Vatican City in the southwest .
The neo-baroque church of San Gioacchino ai Prati di Castello , titled church since 1960 , and the neo-Gothic church of Sacro Cuore del Suffragio were built as parish churches for the new district at the end of the 19th century .
Attractions
The district is criss-crossed by Via Cola di Rienzo, one of Rome's most important shopping streets. The Palazzo di Giustizia ( casually : Palazzaccio ), seat of the Corte Suprema di Cassazione , the highest Italian court, stretches from the central Piazza Cavour to the banks of the Tiber .
