Municipio Roma X is the tenth administrative subdivision of the Italian capital Rome . The name Ostia is derived from the Latin ostium “the entrance; the mouth ", which means the mouth of the Tiber.
It is the only municipality that has access to the Tyrrhenian Sea and is therefore often visited by the Romans in summer. Many tourists inhabit the area's campsites and hotels. Most of the area was drained by land reclamation measures in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The port of Rome is also in the area.
The area is connected to the city center by rail through the Roma Porta San Paolo – Cristoforo Colombo railway.
From 1928 to the Second World War there was a seaplane base at the mouth of the Tiber (⊙), which served as Rome's commercial airport together with the waterway airports on Lake Bracciano , at Ponte Fratta and Ripetta and with the airports Urbe (Littorio) , Centocelle and Guidonia .
history
There were two referendums in the history of the municipality to become an independent municipality like Fiumicino in 1992. In 1989 the vote was no and in 1999 voter turnout was too low. In 2008 the “Pact for Ostia and the 13th Municipio” was drafted. It provides for more autonomy for Ostia and was signed on November 24th, 2009 by the then mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno and the president of the municipality Giacomo Vizzani. It came into force on May 14, 2011.
The Assemblea Capitolina (City Council of Rome) established the Municipio with its resolution No. 11 on March 11, 2013, which replaced the former Municipio Roma XIII and previously Ciroscrizione XIII.
On April 29, 2015 the President Andrea Tassone resigned and Mayor Ignazio Marino appointed Alfonso Sabella as acting head of the municipality. On August 27, 2015, the district government and the district council were disbanded by the Interior Ministry due to infiltration by the Mafia. New elections were scheduled for November 5, 2017.
