Castro Pretorio is the XVIII. Rione (district) of Rome . It is located in the east of the city in the area where the Baths of Diocletian extended.

history

The district takes its name from the Praetorian barracks , which were built here from 23 AD. The Caserma Castro Pretorio and the National Library are now located on the former Praetorian camp .

Well-known buildings and places

The most important squares include the Piazza della Repubblica with the Naiad Fountain , the neighboring Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri and the Diocletian's Baths not far from the Rome-Termini train station . A few hundred meters south of the train station is the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma . Via XX Settembre begins at Porta Pia and is home to some large public buildings, including the Palazzo delle Finanze . The German embassy in Rome is also located in the district .
