history
In the 13th century, a square brick tower was built between Via Collatina and Via Praenestina . In the 14th century, the Boccamazzi family built the Casale Bucchamatiis. On August 15, 1457, Cardinal Domenico Capranica bought the property. He donated it to the Collegio di San Girolamo and it was named Sapienza nuova. The tower was called Tor Sapienza.
At the beginning of the 1920s, the railway worker Michele Testa founded the Cooperativa Tor Sapienza dell'Agro Romano. On May 20, 1923, a school, pharmacy and medical station were inaugurated. The cooperative first built 25 farms and then a hundred more.
During the Second World War, the Tor Sapienza tower was used by the Germans as an ammunition store. When these were pushed back from the area, they blew up the tower. The tower was rebuilt at the end of the 1990s.
The Tor Sapienza zone was created on September 13, 1961 by decision of the Commissario Straordinario. At that time, the Ager Romanus was divided into 59 zones, which were assigned a Roman number and a Z was introduced. Six of them were completely outsourced to the newly founded municipality of Fiumicino and three others partially.
