The Borgo (also I Borghi ) is the 14th district of Rome . It extends from Castel Sant'Angelo to the Vatican .

history

On the ancient Ager Vaticanus put Pope Leo IV. The walled Leonine city to protect pilgrims between the castle developed mausoleum of Hadrian and the St. Peter's Basilica on. The name Burg, used by German-speaking pilgrims, took hold in the Italianized form Borgo . The construction of the Via della Conciliazione (1936–1950) destroyed a large part of the medieval structure.

The coat of arms shows a lion lying in front of a mountain with a star above it. The lion stands for Leo IV as well as Pope Sixtus V , who accepted the Borgo as the 14th Rione into the city of Rome.
