Los Indios is located on US Highway 281, eight miles south of Harlingen in southwest Cameron County. The area was developed for settlement in the late 18th century . The first settlers were Eugenio and Bartolomé Fernández, who had received a settlement permit from the New Spanish governorate. The area was part of the disputed southern Texas territory that both Mexico and the Republic of Texas claimed in the 19th century . Due to the naval blockade of the Union who used Confederates the border area for smuggling of cotton and other goods to Mexico. In 1913 a shipping point was set up in Los Indios. In the same year a post office and a general store were added. The population of Los Indios was 25 in 1925. By 1927 this had increased to 150.

Even in the decades that followed, the place remained a remote place. In 1949 the railway ceased operations in the region. The community also had to deal with the move or the closure of local businesses. In 1955 the Los Indios Independent School District was merged with the San Benito Independent School District . The population had increased to almost 700 inhabitants by 1990. Due to the connection to a housing estate, the official surveys in 1990, 2000 and 2010 fluctuated between almost 700 and over 1000.
